Living Earth discusses how to manage the impacts of Oil and Gas Projects in Asalouyeh...

Living Earth participated in the “First National Conference on the Sustainable, Integrated and Knowledge Based Development of Asalouyeh” which was held between 6-8 January 2010. The conference was designed to address the Sustainable Development challenges facing Asalouyeh, a city on the Persian Gulf which is at the heart of the Pars Special Energy/Economic Zone (PSEEZ), a large industrial complex under development. The development of PSEEZ is based on more than 15 major oil and gas projects associated with the extraction, processing and transport of gas and oil from the South Pars field in the Gulf, one of the largest oil and gas deposits in the world.

This conference was the first of what will be an annual conference, bringing together key stakeholders - including government authorities and leaders of oil and gas companies - to review and discuss ways of tackling challenges of oil and gas development in the region.

Edgardo Garcia-Larralde of Living Earth Foundation gave a presentation entitled: “Sustainable Development Challenges and Options in Managing the Impacts of Oil and Gas Projects: Some Lessons from International Experience”. The presentation drew on Living Earth's experience of working in diverse regions impacted by oil and gas around the world.

IPE academics participate in Caracas conference...

In June 2008, Living Earth facilitated the participation of senior academics from the Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE) in a symposium on Sustainable Development held in Caracas. Dr Jalali, the dean of IPE, and Dr Vatani, an academic from the institute, attended the three day conference which focused on: 'Experiences of Sustainable Development: paths to learning". The event was organised by Living Earth's partner in Venezuela, Fundación Tierra Viva and Simon Bolivar University (Caracas) and was sponsored by Shell Venezuela. Participants from the public and private sector were given the opportunity to share their experiences of Sustainable Development and the event provided a framework of reference IPE's own SD conference which took place in Tehran in October 2008.
