Orinoco Delta - Sustainable Development of the Orinoco Delta
Project Background
The Delta is where Venezuela's largest river flows into the ocean forming a vast system of canals and streams. This system is located mostly in Delta Amacuro state (75%) but also in the states of Monagas, Sucre and Bolivar. The region has a rich flora and fauna and an abundance of habitats. It is the homeland of the Warao - who have lived in harmony with this intricate water system for hundreds of years.
Project Activities
In 1998, Tierra Viva and Living Earth established a project with Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. to build the capacity of the local communities and of key local organisations in order to:

Understand the social-environmental issues and problems of the region

Co-ordinate activities to improve the quality of life of local people

Encourage the sustainable use of natural resources in the region
To achieve these objectives, Tierra Viva worked to improve the ability of the community to develop environmental projects, with teachers, Warao community members and civil society organisations in the area. At the same time, Tierra Viva carried out a programme to strengthen institutions aimed at developing skills and techniques to bring in resources from various funders. In addition Tierra Viva produced educational materials to demonstrate the riches of the Orinoco Delta, promote conservation activities and promote knowledge and awareness of the Warao culture.
The project has formed new partnerships with the British Embassy in Venezuela, the National Lottery Charities Board of the UK, the Venezuelan Ministry of the Environment, as well as with other public institutions and businesses, both at the local and national level. |
