Programme Activities - Micro Credit Programmes
A common limiting factor to rural community initiatives is access to credit. LENF designed a micro-credit scheme to provide a village-based revolving fund for natural resource management initiatives. It is important to promote alternative income-generating activities to existing activities that degrade natural resources. Although the micro-credit scheme belongs to each community, LENF facilitated the establishment and implementation of the schemes and acted as external auditors |

LENF provided funds for the initiation of the micro-credit schemes in selected communities and provides the following support:
-
Setting up of all the necessary structures for the operation of the Savings and Loan Scheme
-
Providing relevant training
-
Supervising and monitoring activities

LENF also developed a community forestry fund for communities in Cross River to develop self-help community forestry projects. The fund provided minimal interest loans to Community Based Organisations (CBOs) to subsidise certain elements of the forestry initiatives such as portable sawmills, chainsaw spares and running costs, vehicle rehabilitation, road maintenance and training. These schemes were all developed with environmental criteria.
