Improving communities' access to energy in the Niger Delta...
In December 2009, the SUNGAS project - Sustainable Utilisation of Nigeria's Gas and Renewable Energy Resources - was launched in Abuja. This community based energy project is being implemented in partnership with Living Earth Nigeria Foundation, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Niger Delta Wetland Centre and Social Action.
This innovative project addresses the problems created by gas flaring in the region by using this gas to generate electricity for local communities. The project will see the construction of a groundbreaking gas to power plant, which will be managed by the communities themselves - enabling communities to see a real benefit from the oil production that has done much to fuel discontent across the region.
