Bayelsa State - Living Earth Environmental Action Programme (LEEAP)

The Living Earth Environmental Action Programme (LEEAP), which started in 1998, worked with communities in order to raise their awareness of environmental issues and to develop their confidence to identify, plan and implement self-help environmental development projects. The programme aimed to improve livelihoods and promote poverty alleviation by addressing the causes of natural resource depletion and promoting effective partnerships between NGOs, government and the private sector to assist communities to these ends.

Living Earth Nigeria Foundation worked with communities, local NGOs, the local government and the private sector to produce environmental education and training materials as well as activities which promote sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

In the oil sector, LENF worked to share new approaches with key players in the community assistance programme.

In fourteen selected communities , Living Earth Nigeria Foundation worked with village groups to design and implement micro-projects related to the use and management of the community's natural resources. By providing information and developing the appropriate skills, LENF helped communities to manage their natural resources more effectively.

The Bayelsa project, the Living Earth Environmental Action Programme (LEEAP), directly benefited communities in the following ways:
